The Science Of Ayurveda
with Geeta Vara
Episode 5, The Chakra Series
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which means Science of Life and roots in the ancient scriptures of the vedas. Dating over 5000 years It is the oldest system of medicine known and has influenced many medical systems since.
This practice aims to treat the root cause of any illness by balancing our three doshas for optimum well-being. According to Ayurveda true balance is only achieved when taking into account mental, emotional and environmental factors beyond the physical.
“What is so fascinating about Ayurveda is that it moves away from the one-size-fits-all approach and offers a more personalised system of medicine to the individual instead”.
What are dosha?
Dosha is a central term in Ayurveda originating from Sanskrit, which can be translated as "that which can cause problems", and which refers to three categories or types of substances that are believed to be present in a person's body. They are made of a combination of five elements, ether, air, fire, water and earth. The doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha work together to maintain regular body functions and when in balance they maintain life.
However, when one or more dosha is out of balance due to factors such as ones diet and lifestyle choices, it can give rise to various health conditions.
We all have these doshas, however what makes us unique is the combination of those doshas, which make us who we are. Both on a mind and body level, we can see what elements are dominant. This helps us to identify for example, what our health vulnerabilities will be.
“We’re starting to see the Western world also moving away from a pill for every ill and interested in a more holistic and natural approach.”
Geeta’s advice on a healthier lifestyle:
Commitment and consistency are really where the winds are and that’s where she has really seen great breakthroughs with clients. She also recommend to listen to the body rather than listening to the cravings of the mind.
